Product update: Improved Access group page

With our evolving customer base, the needs for the Access group page, on which you are able to manage your Access groups to your preference equally evolved and was demanding improvement.

Today we are happy to announce a brand-new redesigned Access group page for the SALTO KS web app that will save time and has a clearer overview of People and Locks.

First of all, what is an Access group:

An Access group is a manually created group of people that you want to provide access to. For example, if you have an office on the 2nd floor of a building you would be in an Access group that would allow you to enter the main entrance, the 2nd floor and all the locks in your office space. You might ask 24/7? That’s up to you! Creating an Access group, enables providing access to a certain group of people in a specific timeframe within seconds which is an essential functionality particularly for space operators, office managers and receptionists.

Let us walk you through the new Access group page:

Access group page overview:

On the new Access group overview page, you are able to find all your Access groups with all the information you need: Number of People, Locks and the timeframe. You are even able to search for a specific Lock or User within an Access group.

XS4mini

Add/Remove people:

To make lives easier we created these two lists for a quick and clean overview of who is exactly in your Access group and who is not. Quickly choose the person/people you want to add or remove. The table on the left shows the people that are included in the Access group, the right table shows who are not. There’s a function in both tables to select all people or search for a specific person.

XS4mini

Add/Remove Locks:

For the Locks, we used the same two lists for a clear overview of which Locks are in your Access group and which are not. The table on the left shows the Locks that are included in the Access group, the right table shows which Locks are not. There’s a function in both tables to select all Locks or search for a specific Lock or Locks, which can be a big time-saver in several circumstances.

XS4mini

Timeframe:

Without a timeframe, people in your Access group will be denied any access. Setting up a timeframe is, therefore, an essential functionality. Per Access group you are able to set up multiple timeframes for specific circumstances, so you are always able to pick the needed timeframe for that Access group in a heartbeat.

XS4mini

Customize:

All timeframes can be customized to the needs of your Access group. If you, for instance, have an Access group that some days need 24/7 access you can set up a timeframe for that and select if needed. If your Access group needs a more specific type of access, let’s say every Wednesday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 you are able to create a timeframe for that and select when needed.

XS4mini

By redesigning the Access group page, we ensure a more fluent customer experience.

The team behind SALTO KS is working continuously to meet the needs of our customers and implement enhancement whenever we can. So if you have new requests make sure to reach out to support@my-clay.com

KS Services: Eagle Eye Networks

For you to run your business with ease and offer the best user experience, SALTO KS is integrated with the software you love.

We are very proud and excited to present our latest SALTO KS Service: An integration with Eagle Eye Networks, a global manufacturer of cloud surveillance systems. After integration, you will find the Service already being activated in your app when logged in..

Eagle Eye Networks was founded in 2012 by Dean Drako and offers cloud-based security camera solutions for every circumstance indoor or outdoor for multiple locations and is built to make the security camera system easier and more accessible for companies. With two Headquarters in Austin, Texas and Amsterdam, 850 resellers globally and customers in 48 countries Eagle Eye Networks has proven to be the right partner to integrate with the KS platform.

“It is great to be able to provide this integration with what we perceive is our twin in the industry for CCTV. Twins because our companies are almost the same age, we share the Cloud vision and both share core values like security, reliability and both sell and support through a global network."
Rick Voogt, MD SALTO KS

You can connect your Eagle Eye camera with SALTO KS by following the steps below:

  • Login with your Eagle Eye credentials to link your Eagle Eye account to your SALTO KS Site
  • To link your Eagle Eye account with KS, a security code is sent to the email address and phone number registered in the Eagle Eye account. Depending on your account you are asked for a two-factor authentication.
  • After completing the activation, all locks within your Site will be listed. Here you can change the Site and add/remove cameras to a lock
1
  • Multiple cameras can be added to your lock, and one camera can be added to multiple locks
  • Now you are able to adopt the functionalities of Eagle Eye in the KS platform
  • On the top left corner of the lock detail page an icon will appear. Here, you can view a live video feed and manage the Eagle Eye cameras
  • When an event is triggered on a lock attached to an Eagle Eye camera, the icon will appear next to the event. Here past recording(s) can be viewed
2

The reason why we are so excited about this integration with Eagle Eye Networks is it enables an intelligent way of keeping a close eye on any door you want with the use of a single app. A coworking space owner can, for instance, go to the KS services page in his or her KS app and find the Eagle Eye Networks integration which shows the real-time recording of any door. You can see twenty-five seconds of footage from the time stamp a certain door is opened and five seconds before the event of a door opening. This is especially helpful to confirm the correct person entered the space or building.

The main benefits of the integration with Eagle Eye Networks:

  • Receive a live video feed
  • Confirm the correct person entered the building/space
  • Let tenants/visitors in remotely from wherever, whenever by seeing who’s in front of the door
  • Multiple cameras can be added to your lock, and one camera can be added to multiple locks
  • Your video is always in your pocket with our iOS and Android SALTO KS mobile app

With this integration the path to many more successful, time and costs reducing collaborations has been paved. If you’d like to be a KS Service within SALTO KS, or integrated SALTO KS smart lock functionality into your own app, make sure to contact us.

The first KS Service of 2019: Comelit

The year 2018 was a great one for SALTO KS. Many changes were made on the front and back-end of the applications, improving, for instance, user experience and the speed of the platform. With these steps forward, ensuring solid grounds for the future, we are expanding the KS family with external KS services such as Comelit and many more to come! The SALTO KS Cloud Business Development team is continuously in search of brands we can successfully integrate with.

The Comelit Group SpA is a company operating on a worldwide scale and specializing in the design and manufacture of video entry, video surveillance, anti-intrusion, home automation and fire protection systems. For an overview of Comelit offices worldwide click here.

"It is interesting and challenging to work on integrations, especially this one. We had the chance to 'play' (work) with new devices and integrate cool and useful features that connect two different platforms." - Jakov, Mobile app developer

Kicking off A joint project in the UK kicked off the partnership between Comelit and SALTO KS. The project was formalized at the end of 2019, and three bricks from SALTO KS travelled to Bologna (Italy), to discuss the integration. The crew consisted of our two mobile developers (for both iOS and Android) and our UX designer. This trio was put together to fully grasp the possibilities that the Comelit mobile SDK (Software Development Kit) offered.

The concept In short, the concept is as follows: The owner of a multi-tenant/residential building purchases a Comelit intercom and SALTO lock for the main entrance. The KS service allows a single app approach therefor reducing investment costs for indoor panels and/or expensive rewiring. By activating this service on mobile devices, tenants of the building are able to:

  • Receive notifications if someone is at the main entrance
  • Ring specific residents in a multi-tenant building
  • Receive a live audio/video feed
  • Let tenants/visitors in remotely from wherever, whenever

All of the above can be managed from the SALTO KS mobile app.

Design & development To create a common understanding of the tool and how it eventually will work on mobile devices a ‘Customer Journey’ was created. This not only describes the integration itself but the complete flow of the product, including the communication with the building manager.

After approval of the design, the development team could begin as well. Geared up with a Comelit demo-case containing all the hardware, the first technological proof of concept was created. It didn’t take long before it was possible to activate an intercom and receive a call from the SALTO KS mobile app.

Releasing a great KS Service The following months the design and development of the integration continued, until the new mobile app version could be released. Loyal to the initial Customer Journey, SALTO KS now offers an easy integration with Comelit intercoms. This enables the owner/manager of a building to offer a new service to tenants: Be notified about someone ringing your doorbell, having a live video/audio feed, and unlocking remotely.

How does it work Let’s dive a bit deeper into the functionality of this KS Service: At some point, the manager of the building has distributed unique codes (or files) to the tenants. Each code (/file) can be used once to activate a device. The building tenant creates an account to log in to the mobile app, and selects Comelit from the KS Services.

2

Next, the choice is given to enter a Code manually or upload a so-called .MUG file. This file automatically configures the device for that specific Comelit intercom, avoiding manual input and chance of human error.

After a successful activation of the device, a walkthrough is presented which explains in four illustrated steps the benefits and functionality of the KS Service. After this walkthrough the connected intercom is presented, meaning that all is set and done to make full use of the functionality.

2

Now, a guest arrives at the main entrance of the building, and he enters the number of a specific apartment. The Comelit intercom will send a push message to the SALTO KS mobile app, directly notifying those who have activated their device. The notification is presented as a regular phone call, which can be either answered or ignored. Answering the call will open the two-way audio feed of the intercom, just like a regular call. From the same call screen, the visitor can be let in directly. The app will remotely grant access for a few seconds! Alternatively, if the guest is not known, a video feed can be started (depending on the type of intercom). This screen offers similar functionality to the previous: Either let them in, mute or end the call.

2

With this integration the path to many more successful, time and costs reducing collaborations has been paved.

We just got ISO certified!

Nailed it: We are happy and proud to inform you that Clay Solutions (the team behind SALTO KS) got ISO certified! After seven months of hard work from the team in collaboration with our interim Security Officer Edwin we got awarded the ISO 27001 certification.

For anyone who isn’t familiar with the ISO 27001: This is an international standard that describes how to manage information security and the corresponding requirements to prevent security breaches. When these requirements are met by successfully completing the audit, a company gets ISO 27001 certified. This certificate is a confirmation of running a business that has a permanent focus on information security. This means all sensitive information is stored safely. To reach this goal we needed to reconsider all internal and external procedures, from suppliers to passwords and examine them with an even more critical eye.

Over the past seven months we’ve determined the potential hazards that could get in the way of protecting important information of the company and its customers. We defined which measures we had to take to prevent security breaches and ensure the utmost confidentiality. Where larger organizations have a more narrow scope because they chose to have just one product line or service certified, Clay decided to have a broader scope and go beyond the security of its office, since it’s is a relatively small organization with a specific service.

Being ISO certified for Clay means that any access control system equipped with a SALTO lock connected to the SALTO KS software is in line with the ISO 27001 requirements.

The main benefits that contribute to a healthy and secure company policy:

  • Increased business resilience

  • Alignment with customer requirements

  • Improved management processes and integration with corporate risk strategies

  • Increased reliability and security of systems and information

  • Improved customer and business partner confidence

  • The access control policy states the rules for accessing systems, equipment, facilities and information. These rules are set up to present a clear overview of which user can access which network and/or services. Access to all systems is in line with the Access Control Policy, this means the access is protected with secure log-on procedures and access to the source code is highly secured.

Software tools that have access to (sensitive) information are restricted to system administrators and can only be accessed under the supervision and certain (rare) situations. Users have to register in our information system and can access certain areas depending on the level of privilege. The rules stated in the IT Security Policy define how the users keep their authentication information confidential.

By achieving the ISO 27001 certification we reduced the risks of an information security breach. The ISMS framework ensures proper risk management and has been set up for the development, maintenance, management and hosting of cloud-based smart lock solutions on behalf of parent company Salto Systems and their customers.

Having met this important ISO 27001 standard we feel we’ve taken yet another big step forward and are ready to proceed with our journey in providing world-class access control. We’ll continue to be certified every year so we continually ensure the level of security that’s expected of us.

The ISO 27001 is published by the International Standardization Organization (ISO) and is the most popular information security standard worldwide.

    Securing your coworking space

As a coworking space owner, you have a long list of responsibilities, including protecting your space and members. It doesn’t come as a surprise that a high level of security is one of the most valued selling points of a coworking space. Taking care of multiple variations of security enables your members to work without a care in the world, and that should be exactly what you are aiming for! If you already adopted a cloud-based access control system like SALTO KS you are ahead of the game: Having knowledge on who goes where and when 24 hours a day.

We defined the most important focus points for you to consider when securing your coworking space:

Locking your doors, the smart way

Every space has doors you rather don’t have an unfamiliar person walking into, such as your server room storing delicate hardware. By providing your members access to the SALTO KS app they get automatically restricted from going wherever you don’t want them to go. Creating an access group for a certain category of people enables you to decide during which time frames certain doors can be unlocked and by whom.

    Invest in cloud-based video surveillance

It goes without saying it’s important to create a protected environment against break-ins or theft. Unfortunately, even in the most loving communities belongings get stolen or just lost. In that case, you are lucky if you have a (cloud-based) video surveillance system installed! The SALTO KS integration with Eagle Eye Networks makes it possible to even record your space 24 hours a day so you have everything on film, and watch in real-time to see what is going on in your business.

    Create a visitor policy

In that same light, it’s helpful to set up your own visitor policy. Some spaces prefer a simple check-in or a wearable badge handed over by the receptionist. But all this takes time, effort, and an extra employee. With SALTO KS you are able to simply grant access to a visitor for a specific timeframe. Ensuring you this visitor is only able to visit the spaces you granted access to and in the timeframe of your choosing.

    Alarm and emergency exits

All spaces need a solid alarm installation that protects your venue from break-ins. Not only to protect your space and members but also to protect your carefully accumulated reputation. With SALTO’s unique door guard unit, your emergency exits are protected at all times. You can use your tag to open the door, without setting the alarm off. In case of emergency, you’ll open the door without presenting your tag and the alarm will be triggered, informing everyone that there’s an emergency.

    Train your staff and members

One of the most important aspects of security is your staff. They are the ones that will make that life-saving difference in the case of an emergency. A well-trained staff that has the knowledge what to do when for example a fire breaks out is crucial. Always make sure your members are aware of specific information like where the emergency exit(s) are situated. Having working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers and first aid kits present at all times and providing knowledge of their whereabouts is just as important.

    Online protection

Being smart about locking your coworking space and reducing risk at emergencies isn’t the only way to make sure your space is fully protected. Unfortunately, we live in a digital world where it’s also possible that your coworking space security network might be attacked. By providing your members' information on how to safely surf the Internet will be of tremendous help in keeping a secure network. Purchasing an IP filtering system could help keep your space protected online. While your members surf the Internet in a safe way, you should also make sure your network is secured by a difficult password. The name of your cat just won’t do. Make sure you have a second network set up for your members and update the password every six months.

Improving UX/UI: the new SALTO KS

Originating from the old Clay by SALTO, SALTO KS has shaped into the mature product it is today. Since we’re always pushing to make our products better, we hereby present some highlights of upcoming exciting improvements.

As the amount of SALTO KS users is growing rapidly, our technology in both back and front-end has been improved for great flexibility. Also, user-feedback provided us with input to improve on the usability of the platform as well.

In short, we took the opportunity to create a more advanced platform from both a technological and user-experience perspective.

    Longterm vision

Improving the user experience overall isn’t only based on input from end-users, the marketing team or technological advancements. At the base of these changes, there are also specific goals that help develop the product in the right direction over time. These are some of the key statements we’ve made from the get-go:

A unified user-experience: Today, the web and mobile apps offer different functionalities, while it makes more sense to unify more and more functions on all platforms.

One visual language: Part of the above point, is not just to make all apps work, but also look the same. Therefore we’ve started setting up a design-system, securing consistent design of elements, regardless where they’re shown.

UX/UI sweep: Some of the old functionalities in the web and mobile apps were no longer serving a purpose as our customers grew in size. While other features were still useable but could be designed in a different, better way.

Let’s have a look at the most noticeable changes:

    Terminology

Starting with the seemingly simple things; we changed some of the terminologies. The most obvious ones are Systems and Doors, which we now call Sites and Locks. Both changes make sense, for a site is referring to a location, and a lock is actually what the end-user is interacting with, whether on a door or on a locker. The door doesn’t open, but the lock unlocks.

Also we’re no longer referring to home.saltoks.com, but app.saltoks.com. We’re approaching SALTO KS as an application, that is available via web or mobile.

    Terminology

    Web: Revised cards

On a big screen, you can display information in a big way. We’ve always had a ‘cardview’ on desktop for Doors (Locks!), People and Access groups. Yet some of the information and functions in there are barely used, or deserve more emphasis. That’s why we decided to redesign the cards, focussing on displaying the status and available call-to-actions.

    Cards

    Wizards

Some of the old flows, especially on the web-platform, were too complex to capture in a single screen. A great example of this is how you would set up an access group; one of the key functionalities of the product. Before; this was done in a single popup displaying all people, locks and timeframes. With larger sites, this did not work up to our standards. Therefore we’ve split up the different steps, keeping focus on a single task and offering explanation where needed. This is a wizard-type flow taking users step-by-step through a process. This is a design pattern that we apply for other flows as well, making the overall application more user friendly. These are also used in mobile apps where applicable.

    Wizard

    Hardware

Probably the most difficult functionality throughout the interfaces is setting up the hardware for a site. Split between different tabs per hardware type, and one tab to connect all of them, this was a counter-intuitive way of working. Therefore we’ve combined all available functions and steps in a single screen, offering both a hardware overview and detailed step-by-step configuration. A clear listview is presented showing the connection between different hardware items.
