Spotlight on a Dealer: Locs

Locs is one of the top dealers of SALTO KS in Belgium and has more than 20 years of experience in the domains of security and access control.

Installers that work for Locs say that there are no keys, locks or electric systems that are foreign or challenging to them. The technicians who are prepared to equip any door with any type of lock ensure strong field service. When you find out that some of the installers have been working together for 65 years at Locs, their deep knowledge and high quality of service come as no surprise!

The company has its own steel workshop where all the hardware elements are tailored to customer’s doors. The administration and sales department of Locs handles each customer request carefully and maintains operations of the company.

We spoke to Pieter Jans , owner of Locs and user of SALTO KS, about the future of access control and his expert view on cloud-based access control solution SALTO KS:

Pieter, tell us, what made you decide to become a SALTO KS dealer?

From the very first beginning, we have been a Premium Inspired business Partner of SALTO. The collaboration has been excellent from the start and we have completed various big projects together. When SALTO started with Salto KS we were very interested in the possibilities of the system. The strength became obvious quickly and it was a welcome addition to our access-control product range: Especially for decentralized customers who are looking for an easy but strong and efficient access control system.

How progressive do you think Belgium is in terms of cloud-based access control?

In the area of innovation and R&D, Belgium is internationally known for taking the lead in a number of technological fields. The Belgian customer is quite demanding about safety, especially when it comes to their home or building. Besides safety, the comfort of using and possibilities of usage are very important. Customers are expressing more interest to use the system in their own way. Because of this, we get a lot of questions of creative use of the system. So, to my experience, we can say that the Belgian people are quite progressive.

What is your favorite function of SALTO KS?

It’s not really a function that is my favourite, but it is the app! The possibility of opening doors via remote opening or with the help of my cell phone and checking the events is proven to be very handy for me. I even use Salto KS in different locations of my own enterprise!

content-mkdesignquest-a.png

What new features or integrations would you and your customers like to see in a cloud-based access control system?

When we look at the private market, we can see that the traditional houses are moving more and more to “Smart home”. These homes are bursting with technological advances and people prefer to have a centralized tool to use all these technologies, for instance, their tablet or smartphone. But they also want the comfort to use numerous tablets or cell phones, with the updated systems to their disposal. Therefore, it is my belief that the integration of different technologies into one application is something that the future client is really looking for.

content-mkdesignquest-a.png

We now have finger, and face-ID. Where will the authentication methods draw the line in the access control industry?

It is always difficult to predict what the future brings. It all depends on the purchase requirements and needs of the customer. Do customers prioritize safety? Or comfort? Control? The type of authentication depends on what the client is looking for. When the safety-level has the highest priority, they can always combine different methods, for example, an eyeball-ID and fingerprint. It is my belief that the combination of authentication methods results in a higher safety level rather than one highly advanced method. But one thing is certain: to have a functional access control system, you always have to work with a “Unique ID”. This can be a badge, finger or even an eyeball.

We can explore all the biometric options of the human body, but at one point the possibilities will end or won't be comfortable to use.

Thank you Pieter and the Locs team for your insightful answers!

Spotlight on a dealer: SM Schloss + Schlüssel GmbH

The Cologne-based company SM Schloss + Schlüssel GmbH was founded in 1983 by the managing director Hermann Manderscheid. The company evolved from a two-man operation that made keys of all kinds and executed homeownership, over time to a reputable security specialist. In 1995 Hermann’s son Stefan Manderscheid was hired as the second managing director of the company.

With the growth of the company also the computer age arrived. Gradually, computer-aided locking systems and CNC milling devices were purchased.

Today, the company has one of the most modern equipment in Cologne.
We spoke to managing director Stefan Manderscheid about SM Schloss + Schlüssel, SALTO KS and the challenges they had to overcome:
Schlossel

What were some of the early day bumps with KS when it was fairly a new product for small and medium-sized businesses?

The biggest challenge at the beginning was a system without local access management and a limited amount of offline keys. Without the necessary know-how, the projecting of the radio transmitters was also a challenge.
Schlossel

How was it for you to embrace selling a cloud solution like KS, vs. server based or other solutions?

Luckily, I didn’t have to decide. We sell both systems with great success. Cloud solution has, however, great advantages for smaller companies, who have no infrastructure, such as servers and admin, or companies looking for cloud integrations.

How do the sales of KS and other cloud solutions compare to your other non-cloud solution sales for access control?

As we are currently doing larger projects with non-cloud solutions, the ratio is estimated to be 40:60, but the gap is closing rapidly.

What are the challenges you face when explaining/selling SALTO KS to a business?

Actually, it is not a challenge. In general, you can tell quite easily if the customer is potentially suitable for the solution. After that, you just have to show the system. From there it’s usually smooth sailing.
Schlossel

How do you see the locking industry evolving with the new market demands?

Electronics are clearly on the rise: If you do not start today, you will not have any customers tomorrow.

The supply and installation of fittings, safes, electronic access controls, alarm systems, mailbox systems and home security are just as much a part of the main business for SM Schloss + Schlüssel GmbH as repairs, custom-made products and keys of all kinds.

This family business has proven to handle any type of demand, and we are happy SALTO KS is in such good hands.

We would like to thank Stefan for the time he took to chat with us!

Guardian Security's consultants are always available to discuss their customer's requirements to improve their home or business security.

We spoke to Guardian Security SW Ltd.’s Sales manager David Wileman about the pros and cons of selling a cloud based solution in today's access control industry:

Guardian

How was it for you to embrace selling a cloud solution like KS, vs. server based or other solutions?

Originally they were separate markets, we only really sell Salto so it was easy to embrace, however, the line between Salto and KS has blurred. Both have different unique selling points.

Guardian

How do the sales of KS and other cloud solutions compare to your other non-cloud solution sales for access control?

Currently, SALTO KS is the only cloud product we sell. The beauty of cloud is that it removes any IT investment and responsibilities from the customer, so KS is a game changer.

What were some of the early day challenges with KS when it was fairly a new product for small and medium-sized businesses?

I'm not sure that there were many challenges, however, the limiting factors were the number of app users per IQ as it narrowed the market, this has now been dealt with. The fact that we can't check in/out guests is still a problem and precludes us from most of the hotel market. There is now a Keypad which was originally missing, so all in all other than the check-in/out most things have luckily been resolved.

How do you see the locking industry evolving with the new market demands?

Moving more to a cloud-based system. Maybe the use of smartphones as carriers, however, there is still the problem of flat batteries which a lot of end users fail to realize, I like the KS keypad for that reason. More integration certainly on the hotel side with booking websites. More differentiation between manufacturers with regard to the security of how the data is stored.

Guardian

What are the challenges you face when explaining/selling SALTO KS to a business?

None really that I can think of. Cloud has been around for a pretty long time so most people get the concept.

Guardian

Spotlight on a dealer: Lockhouse

Interview with Frank de Weijs: Owner of Lockhouse and top 3 SALTO KS dealer in the Netherlands

Lockhouse, based in Eindhoven, has over thirty years of experience in selling high-quality access control systems. Their team consists of five professionals that work hard every day to put a smile on their client’s faces by selling advanced access control systems like SALTO KS. The strength of Lockhouse lies in clear communication between the client and a designated Lockhouse employee who manages a project from A to Z.

We spoke to Lockhouse owner Frank de Weijs about the company, SALTO KS and his beloved old-timers:

Lockhouse

How did Lockhouse start?

In 1987 our company was founded as a locksmith/security company. In 2008 Guido van Dal joined the company as a partner and in 2013 the founder resigned and Frank de Weijs joined and took a part of the founding on him.

Frank de Weijs explains: "Guido and I were already working a lot on electronic locking so from 2013 the company changed a lot: From b2c to b2b. In B2B there’s a lot more opportunity for the electronic locking market. Our clients consist mostly of housing associations, healthcare institutions and companies."

How did you come across SALTO KS?

We were already working a lot with SALTO. When SALTO KS was introduced to us it was a logical step to sell this product.

Lockhouse

What are your favorite functionalities of SALTO KS?

The ability to block tags (hardware tokens) is very convenient if you, for instance, have a specific timeframe you don’t want a person with a tag coming into a specific space. SALTO KS distinguishes itself also by the remote opening feature that is available in the app on your phone. Customers or suppliers waiting outside your office and you’re running late? Simply tap your phone and let them in!

What were some of the early day challenges with KS when it was fairly a new product for small and medium-sized businesses?

Finding out if there was a good enough signal available from the IQ and if it was possible to transfer that signal from the IQ to the repeaters

How was it for you to embrace selling a cloud solution like KS, vs. server based or other solutions?

We believe cloud based products are the future so embracing a cloud solution like KS was easy for us!

Lockhouse

How do the sales of KS and other cloud solutions compare to your other non-cloud solution sales for access control?

How do the sales of KS and other cloud solutions compare to your other non-cloud solution sales for access control? The KS solution is more suitable for smaller systems. For the bigger systems we usually recommend other SALTO products or a different brand. For a smaller system the extra maintenance products like encoder, programmer and software are usually too expensive.

What are the challenges you face when explaining/selling SALTO KS to a business?

It can be difficult to estimate the number of IQ’s we need to mount, because we can’t always know if the IQ can communicate well enough with the cylinder, due to other wireless products we are not able to anticipate on beforehand.

How do you see the locking industry evolving with the new market demands?

I think more and more companies will come with cloud solutions since this is undeniably the direction the locking industry is heading. Granting access from your phone will be part of that future.

What is the craziest you ever encountered with during your work at Lockhouse?

Since we’re based in Eindhoven everyday is a crazy day! (A famous Dutch saying is ‘Eindhoven de gekste’ which translates into ‘ Eindhoven the craziest’). “Seriously, it’s one big celebration to be able to make our clients happy with the whole team!”

Fun fact:

Frank collects old-timers, and has a few gems stored hidden at the Lockhouse property!

Lockhouse

Whether it’s safety, comfort or a secure feeling Lockhouse is solely focused on advising and assembling high quality solutions.

We want to thank Lockhouse and especially Frank and his wonderful team of professionals for their hospitality!
